Chapter 14

• ---------------------------- •

“I can’t believe we haven’t done this since we got back,” Lewis said, as the wind tugged at her blonde hair.

Jasmine laughed, kicking her horse into a gallop. “I know.”

After Jack left, Lewis had begged Jasmine to go on an outride with her. They’d been back for months and it was the first time the sisters headed into the hills, like they used to when they were children. When they finally reached the top of the hill, with the entire span of the Double-T lying in the valley below them, they dismounted.

Each lost in their own thoughts they walked for a while. Jasmine couldn’t stop thinking about Jack. This morning, when Tanner had vowed to bust his nose for bringing a mustang to the stud, she couldn’t help but feel protective of him and the mustang. That mustang had nowhere else to go, and as for Jack… well she wasn’t sure if she wanted Jack to go – or to kiss her again.

“I’ve got some news I want to share with you,” Lewis said, turning to Jasmine with a nervous smile.

“Are you pregnant?” Jasmine wanted to kick herself for being so blunt.

Lewis laughed shaking her head. “Really, that’s the first conclusion you jump to. No, Tanner asked me to marry him.”

“What?” Jasmine said, shaking her head. “But you’ve only known each other for what – like three months.”

“I know, but it’s right, Jazz. I can feel it, here.” Lewis held a hand to her chest. “I think Pa would have approved, don’t you?”

“Yeah,” Jasmine said, a smile slowly rounding her cheeks, “He would’ve. Congratulations, I’m happy for you.”

“Your mouth is moving but your eyes are saying something else. Don’t you think we should get married?”

“No, it’s not that…” Jasmine trailed off.

“We’re over not talking to each other, Jasmine,” Lewis said, narrowing her eyes. “Can we please not go back to that? If you have something to say, say it.”

Jasmine shook her head. “I’m sorry. I’m really happy for you, honestly. My mind is just all bugged up at the moment.”

“With what? Do you want to go back to New York?”

“No, it’s not that … I kissed Jack.”

“You did what?” Lewis asked, surprised. “What, when, how?”

“You’re engaged, I think you know the how. Last night. I bumped into Lisa Stokes. She’s still in town; she owns the Wash and Whirl.”

“I thought that was a Laundromat?”

“So did I. Anyway, we went on a girl’s night last night and I bumped into Jack. I kissed him. He kissed back and then he was angry, and brought me home like a naughty child.”

“Do you like him?”

“Yeah, I wouldn’t have kissed him if I didn’t. It’s just, I don’t get him. He kisses me and then he’s angry with me. Urgh… I think I’m going Colorado Crazy. I’ve been stuck in this small town too long.”

“No, I think you’re falling in love.” Lewis smiled and took Jasmine’s hand. “Tanner told me some about Jack, and if I can give you some advice … if you really think you like him, be patient.
